Take a Day to Experience the Charm of early Charleston
Plan to spend a whole day enjoying the beauty, charm and history of Charleston, South Carolina, once the conference is over.
We have planned a unique tour for you to experience some of the history of the Old South. Make your schedule for an extra night in Charleston to see it all.
- The Tour will leave the Sheraton Hotel at 10:30 AM (after the Ambassador Meeting) and take the group to the Sea Spray Waterfront Cafe for lunch before boarding the SpiritLine tour to Fort Sumter. We want to be sure you can enjoy the boatride without being hungry. The lunch is included in the registration fee.
- FORT SUMTER NEXT. From the dock near our restaurant the Fort Sumter SpiritLine ship will take us for a 2 1/4 hour tour. It is the only tour stopping at the Fort for a visit to the National Monument, where the first shots of the Civil War were fired. Enjoy a relaxing cruise to the island Fort with commentary on points of interest in Charleston Harbor. At the island, historians will provide detailed information about the Fort and its pivotal role in the War between the States. There is a museum with fascinating exhibits and small gift shop. After one hour at the Fort we will cruise back to port, enjoying panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and Charleston's bustling harbor.
- Next the bus will take us to the historic Market area in Old Town Charleston
where the open market provides unique local items for gifts to take home. The area abounds with interesting shops to tempt your shopping needs. We plan to provide 1 1/2 hours for you to explore on your own...and then put your packages back on the locked area of the bus.
- TRY OLDTIME TRANSPORTATION: From 4:30 - 5:30 PM we will enjoy a relaxing carriage ride
through the historic streets of Charleston with a tour guide to point out all of the interesting stories of the past.
- HUNGRY YET? We will have dinner at Poogan's Porch, 72 Queen Street, one of Charleston's oldest and most reputable culinary establishments. In addition to authentic Lowcountry Dinners at reasonable prices, the restaurant suggests that the ghost of one its earlier inhabitants (Zoe St. Amand) has been spotted there in various locations at various times. Pots and pans have been known to crash inexplicably in the kitchen and hostesses have witnessed visions of an old woman in a long black dress walking around and then disappearing.
The building is a monument to Poogan, a scruffy neighborhood dog, that became guardian of the newly opened restaurant in 1976 and greeted the customers. He died of natural causes in 1979 and the building is his monument. In 2003 the Travel Channel voted Poogan's Porch "Third Haunted Place in America".
Note that we will have separate checks for dinner so you are free to order as you wish. Check out their menu at www.poogansporch.com.
- GHOST & GRAVEYARD TOUR . . . Last on our agenda is an after-dinner stroll!
You’ll get an exclusive opportunity to walk inside the gates of one of Charleston’s oldest graveyards after dark. When all the other walking tours are looking in through the wrought iron fence, you’ll be on the inside. Explore the graveyard’s dark corners, closely inspect the headstones to see what you might learn, and take a moment to step across the graves, if you dare. Learn about the history of Charleston’s graveyards and hear the stories of the famous individuals who found their final resting place in the Holy City.
You've heard the spooky Charleston ghost stories. Now experience them on this up close and personal tour that takes you where others won’t dare go. Graveyards – full of history, intrigue and tales of love and loss.
